The style hustleThe pandemic had revealed just how creative and resilient Canada's fashion, beauty, and design entrepreneurs are. The 2021 edition of The Globe and Mail’s annual Canada’s Best Dressed List celebrated a hand-picked resilient group from all across the country, among which Azamit was among the few selected.
A professional storyteller, creative director, and curator, Azamit is drawn to the history she finds in vintage fashion. "The attachment is more related to the story on why and how I found it than the brand itself," she says of her favorite finds, which include a collection of vintage kimonos she stores in traditional washi rice paper wrappers.

Transcended Elsewhere by Hintsa RudmanAzamit, founder of the SOUK event, a meeting place for lovers of beautifully crafted objects from Quebec, embodies good taste. After guiding numerous designers in developing their image, she, alongside her partner Francis Rudman, launches the high-end furniture brand, Hintsa Rudman. Their elegant pieces are inspired by their shared history.
Hintsa Rudman reflects the unique identities of its two founders. Hintsa evokes the name of Azamit's Eritrean-born father. The first collection, Hiwot, also pays homage to her maternal grandmother, a seamstress whose name means "life" in Ge'ez, an ancient Ethiopian language. A word that beautifully captures the soul of these initial pieces associated with each one's childhood memories.

The MontrealersSince I was a little girl, I've been fascinated by designers, about the story behind an object. I've always wanted to focus on that story, whether by way of a fashion show, visual content, branding, an installation, a collaboration with a graphic designer, colours or textures. My ultimate goal is to democratize the design industry by forging ties and encouraging various collaborations in order to build bridges between designers, entrepreneurs, and the community at large.

Time-Worn Recollections: Hintsa Rudman’s ‘Hiwot’I look at the big picture. I tend to look at the whole story from A-to-Z, to see where we start and where we can take it, and then I’ll go into the details from there. For me, it’s super important to know the message that you’re trying to convey. :
“Hiwot is the name of my grandmother,” explains Azamit, “but it also means ‘life’ in Ge’ez. We wanted something that represented our first collection – and this felt like a great way to launch not only the collection, but the company also. It’s our way of saying ‘this is Life’” – with Francis adding, “this is us.”

“I’ve had many lives here,” she says. “Everywhere I look, I’m reminded of an adventure, a time, a place.” There are the treasures unearthed on trips to Bali, Mexico and Japan, the objets crafted by the many local makers she champions, the disco ball on the coffee table—the centrepiece of many an epic party, including her 40th birthday bash. The 24-hour affair featured musician jam sessions, DJ sets, a gourmet brunch and traditional Abyssinian coffee prepared by her mother.
